Welcome to North Dorset Railway Trust
Welcome to the Shillingstone Railway Station’s website. This is an exciting time for the North Dorset Railway Trust as we begin the transition to an operational heritage railway. There will be plenty of news to report in the coming months as well as an increasing number of events, activities and volunteer projects.
We are in transition from being a Railway Project to a Railway Station and that will be shown here first. Recently we have welcomed new volunteers to the Station, worked out the Station track layout, removed dead trees at our southern boundary, cleaned ballast ready for tracklaying, added a Brake Van to our rolling stock, and removed unwanted items from the yard.
The Trust seeks a range of volunteers to help improve the Station as a visitor attraction and to help move the Station towards operational status. There is always plenty to do at the Station. Why not visit the Station any weekend or Wednesday and savour the various projects underway during a Guided Tour of the station and signal box which will be celebrating '140 years' in October this year?
We are open every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday, and Bank Holiday Mondays. Come along for coffee, lunch or tea, (with Hot food now available) and tour our station and soak up the gardens and beautiful country views!
Hot News for 2019
The Trust is delighted to announce that it has been awarded a grant of £47,229 from the Dorset County Council Leader Grant scheme as an 80% per cent contribution towards a range of works that will constitute substantial improvements to the station.
The first and most pressing job will be to realign the Trailway, taking it off the down platform and along a newly constructed route behind the platform. This will have a suitable, good quality surface and will improve the safety of horses, their riders and cyclists. The down platform itself will also be resurfaced.
Planning permission for this work has already been obtained and now the funds are in place, work is well under way.
A great deal of work went in to preparing the application for the works and obtaining the agreement of all interested parties, including the Trailway users group.
The grant will also enable us to resurface the approach to the station and provide appropriate parking for cars and mini buses giving flat, safe access to the station. Track will also be laid across this area as it would have been when this area was formerly a working station yard. A disabled toilet is also being developed in the exisiting toilet block.
