Radio waves give boost from Shillingstone signal boxDATE POSTED: 27 Sep 2018
North Dorset Railway Trust were hosts to Flight Refuelling Amateur Radio Society (FRARS)
Last weekend 22/23rd September FRARS used Shillingstone’s signal box to broadcast to other heritage railway stations in and around the UK.
Despite poor weather the group were still able to contact Swindon & Cricklade Railway and The Royal Deeside Railway amongst many others.
The team this year were Richard Giles, Clive Lambert-Hutchinson, Cherry Hawkins & Dan Sawyer who also managed to call up with many other countries with-in the EU including Denmark, Spain, Poland, France, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium and Italy. Again just a few of the many they reached out to.
In residence on the Sunday too, was ex-signalman John Cluett who gave a demonstration of signal control from the fully restored and fully working signal box at Shillingstone station. John, who now is 85yrs worked on the Somerset & Dorset joint railway at the Stalbridge Signal box where the Pines Express did stop. He was there from 1959 till 1962 and remembers the many stories of the days of steam.
Shillingstone will celebrate next month (October 21st) 140 years of their Signal Box, built in 1878.
